Whole of Medical Supply and Demand Study

The Whole of Medical Supply and Demand Study is a health workforce model that projects the supply and demand of Australia's medical practitioners from 2024 to 2048. The study includes medical practitioners who are currently undertaking clinical work and classifies them into the following groups:

  1. Interns (Australian and New Zealand medical graduates)
  2. Hospital prevocational doctors
  3. Hospital career medical officers (CMOs)
  4. Registrars
  5. Specialists
  6. Others which include non-specialists working outside of hospitals and Non-Vocationally Recognised General Practitioners (Non-VR GPs)
  7. Limited and other provisional registrants

Historical trends and the current profile of the medical practitioner workforce can be accessed through the Whole of Medical Supply Profile Dashboard. This dashboard draws on data from the Australia's Future Health Workforce (AFHW) dataset, which is created from the National Health Workforce Datasets (NHWDS) for workforce modelling and planning.

The model will be updated every two years with the latest available data from all relevant data sources.
